Central Alberta wait times skyrocket compared to rest of the province: Orr

The Red Deer Regional Hospital continues to see wait times for surgeries skyrocket compared to the rest of the province with 325 postponed surgeries at the hospital in 2015-2016, Wildrose MLA for Lacombe-Ponoka Ron Orr said today.

The hospital with the third worst record on wait times had 39 postponed surgeries for 2015-2016. The postponed surgeries at Red Deer Regional Hospital make up almost half of the total surgeries postponed in Alberta.

“This is just the latest sign of mismanagement from our NDP government as health care in central Alberta is not only worse than in other parts of the province, but continues to lag far behind,” Orr said. “Somehow this government can prioritize hiring Ontario companies to install free lightbulbs, while patients continue to suffer in lengthy waiting lines for surgeries across central Alberta.”

Wildrose Leader Brian Jean put forward a motion to urge the government to identify barriers in the health care system and mimic best practices from other provinces to reduce wait times. NDP MLAs have so far spoken against it and are expected to vote against it later today.

“When is this NDP government going to realize that these outrageous wait times are now their responsibility and reverse the failures of this and previous governments?” Orr asked.
