United Conservatives celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas
United Conservative Interim Leader Nathan Cooper and MLAs Leela Aheer, Prasad Panda and Prab Gill have issued the following statement in celebration of both Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas:
“Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.
“Bandi Chhor Divas celebrates a Sikh historic event related to the sixth Guru, Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. According to the Sikh tradition, Guru Hargobind was released from prison by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir who freed 52 other Hindu kings with him.
“Characterized by prayer, fireworks and the lighting of millions of lights, Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas are beautiful festivals that celebrate the best parts of us, and serve as a reminder to resist evil and to show compassion towards others.
“Both are incredibly hopeful and joyous times of year in the Hindu and Sikh calendar.
“On behalf of the United Conservative Party Caucus, we want to wish all those celebrating in Alberta and around the world a very Happy Bandi Chhor Divas and Happy Diwali!”
